Block Drop 3D: the classic falling-block puzzle, built in real 3D
Cover illustration made for this page. Real screenshots of the game are further down.
You know this game even if you have never heard the name. Seven shapes fall into a well, you turn and slide them, and every row you complete disappears. Let the stack reach the top and it is over.
Block Drop 3D keeps those rules exactly and draws the well as a real 3D box. Drag the board and the camera swings around it. Let go and it settles back to the front. The pieces have depth and light, but underneath it is the flat 10 × 20 puzzle you already know, so the 3D never gets in the way of playing.
It runs in your browser on a computer, tablet or phone. No download, no adverts, no account.
How to play
If you have played a falling-block game before, skip straight to the controls. If not, this is all of it:
- Press Start Game (or Enter, or Space). A piece appears at the top of the well and starts to fall.
- Move and turn it while it falls. Left and right slide it, up turns it. The faint copy at the bottom of the well, the ghost piece, shows exactly where it will land.
- Fill a whole row. A complete row of ten cubes flashes and disappears, and everything above it drops down. Clear four rows with one piece for the biggest score.
- Plan ahead. The Next panel shows the three pieces coming up. Hold parks one piece so you can swap it back in later, once per drop.
- Keep going. Every 10 rows you clear, the level goes up and the pieces fall faster. The game ends when a new piece has no room to appear.

Controls
Keyboard on a computer, buttons on a phone. The keys follow the usual layout for this kind of game, so your fingers probably know them already.
| Action | Keyboard | Touch |
|---|---|---|
| Move left / right | ← → | ◀ ▶ |
| Soft drop (faster, +1 point a row) | ↓ | ▼ |
| Rotate clockwise | ↑ or X | ⟳ |
| Rotate anticlockwise | Z | – |
| Hard drop (instant, +2 points a row) | Space | ⤓ |
| Hold | C or Shift | Hold |
| Pause | P | Pause button |
| Music on / off | M | Music 1 · 2 · 3 · Off |
| Full screen | F | Fullscreen button |
| Turn the camera | Drag the board, mouse wheel to zoom | Drag with one finger |

Hold left or right and the piece keeps sliding after a short pause, the auto-repeat you would expect from a console. When a piece is up against a wall or the stack, rotating tries a few small nudges first, so a turn rarely fails just because you are one square too close.
Know your seven pieces
Pieces come out in shuffled sets of seven, one of each shape. That means you never wait more than twelve pieces for the long bar, and you never get the same awkward shape four times in a row.
IThe long bar. Keep one column empty at the side and save it for a four-row clear.
OThe square. It looks the same however you turn it, so put it on flat ground.
TThe most flexible piece. It fits bumps and corners that nothing else will.
SLeaves a hole on flat ground. It sits best on a step that rises to the left.
ZThe mirror of S. It sits best on a step that rises to the right.
JGood for filling the edges and the column next to a wall.
LThe mirror of J. Same job on the other side.

Scoring and levels
Line clears are multiplied by your level, so the same clear is worth more later in the game.
| Cleared with one piece | Points |
|---|---|
| 1 row | 100 × level |
| 2 rows | 300 × level |
| 3 rows | 500 × level |
| 4 rows | 800 × level |
| Soft drop | 1 a row |
| Hard drop | 2 a row |
The level goes up every 10 rows. On level 1 a piece falls one row a second. By level 10 it falls about fifteen rows a second, and that is where it stops being relaxing. Your best score is saved in your browser and shown next to your current one.
Five habits that help
- Keep the surface flat. Bumps and deep holes are what end games. A flat stack takes any piece.
- Leave one column open. Build up the other nine and drop the long bar down the gap. Four rows at once score 800 × level, against 400 × level for four single rows.
- Use Hold. Park the long bar there while you build, or swap out a piece that has nowhere good to go.
- Read the queue. Glance at the next three pieces before you place the current one.
- Hard drop when you are sure. Space places the piece straight away. It saves time on every piece and adds 2 points a row.
Playing with kids
The rules take a minute to explain, which makes it a good one to share. A child can steer while you call out where the piece should go, then swap. A game lasts a few minutes, so “one more” does not run into bedtime.
There are no adverts and nothing to buy. The only outside link in the game is a small Buy Me a Coffee button for grown-ups in the toolbar.

Good to know
- Browsers: it needs WebGL, which every current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari has. If your browser cannot draw 3D, the game tells you instead of showing a blank screen.
- Sound: three background tracks (upbeat, tense and calm) and sound effects, each with its own on/off. Browsers only start music after your first click or key press.
- Language: the EN / 中 button switches the whole game between English and Traditional Chinese.
- Privacy: your scores, music and language settings are stored in your browser only. The site counts visits with Google Analytics.

Yes. No adverts, no in-game purchases, no paid version and no sign-up. If you enjoy it, there is an optional Buy Me a Coffee link.
Can I play it on a phone or iPad?
Yes. On a touch screen you get buttons for move, soft drop, rotate, hard drop and hold, and you can drag the board to turn the camera.
Is this Tetris?
Block Drop 3D is my own falling-block puzzle. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by The Tetris Company. If you know that kind of game, the rules will feel familiar: seven pieces, a 10 × 20 well, line clears, hold and a ghost piece.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Open the page and press Start Game. The whole game is one web page, with no plug-ins.
Where is my best score saved?
In your browser's storage on that device. Clearing your browser data resets it, and another device starts from zero.
Ready for a game?
Free, no adverts and no sign-up. One game takes a few minutes.
