How to play Strategy Trail

  1. Read the problem, for example 199 + 56 or 72 ÷ 4.
  2. Step 1: choose the smartest plan from three. The best plan turns green.
  3. Step 2: use that plan and pick the answer from four options.
  4. On the last case, use the on-screen calculator, but estimate first.
  5. Ten cases. The end screen shows both your correct answers and your smart plans.

Mental maths strategies for Year 4

Bridging (round to a friendly number, then adjust), compensating, building from known multiplication facts, doubling and halving, and counting up to find a difference are the main efficient strategies for Year 4. Children who can choose a strategy, not just follow one, solve problems faster and catch their own errors, and they know when a calculator is the better tool.

For grown-ups

Every case has two steps: choosing a plan, then the answer. The plans practised are bridging through a friendly number (199 + 56 → 200 + 56 − 1), compensating in subtraction (503 − 200 + 2), building from known facts (6 × 8 = 5 × 8 + 8), doubling and halving for × 4 and ÷ 4, and counting up for differences. All divisions come out without a remainder. The last case is deliberately a calculator job: four 4-digit amounts. Estimating first (about 12 300) is how you catch a mistyped key, which is the "appropriate digital tools" part of AC9M4N06 in the Australian Curriculum v9.
