Qwen 4 looks close. On 6 November 2026 the official Qwen account on X posted a poster of thousands of birds flying in the shape of a giant fish, with one line of Chinese, 北冥有鱼 其名为_ ("In the Northern Sea there is a fish, and its name is..."), and four English words: "The becoming begins." The line comes from a 2,300-year-old story about a giant fish that turns into a giant bird, so the message is about transformation. My verdict: it's almost certainly a Qwen 4 teaser, but Qwen hasn't named the model or given a date yet, and I couldn't find any official "Qwen 4 Preview" you can download today. Here's what the image means, what's actually confirmed, and what you can run right now while you wait.
What did Qwen post on 6 November?
A single image and the words "The becoming begins." The post went up at 10:00 pm Brisbane time on Friday 6 November (12:00 UTC), and when I checked it had about 2.1 million views and 16,000 likes. It doesn't say "Qwen 4", and it doesn't give a date. Everything else people are saying about it, including model sizes and launch days, comes from reading between the lines.
I'm not reposting Qwen's poster here because it's their artwork, so please open the link to see it. Briefly: a deep blue sky fades to a sunrise over the sea, dark islands sit on the horizon, and a huge flock of birds forms the long body of a fish. Near the bottom is the Chinese line, with 其名为 ("its name is") in Qwen blue and a blinking-cursor underscore where the name should be.
What does 北冥有鱼,其名为 mean?
It's the opening of "Free and Easy Wandering" (逍遥游), the first chapter of the Zhuangzi, a Daoist classic from around the 4th century BC. Almost every Chinese student learns it at school, so Chinese readers fill in the blank instantly. The missing word is 鲲 (Kun).
The passage goes roughly like this (my own plain translation):
北冥有鱼,其名为鲲。鲲之大,不知其几千里也。化而为鸟,其名为鹏。
In the Northern Sea there is a fish called Kun. Kun is so big that nobody knows how many thousand li long it is. It changes into a bird, and the bird is called Peng.
The story goes on: Peng's wings are like clouds hanging across the sky, and when the sea stirs it rises on the wind and flies 90,000 li high on its way to the Southern Sea. In everyday Chinese, 鲲鹏 (Kun-Peng) has come to stand for huge ambition and a great leap. People use 鹏程万里, "Peng's ten-thousand-li journey", to wish someone a bright future.
There's a nice joke in the original too. In old dictionaries 鲲 can also mean fish roe, the tiniest beginning of a fish, and Zhuangzi uses it for the biggest fish imaginable. Something small becomes something enormous, and then becomes something else entirely.
How does the image match the story?
Once you know the story, the poster reads like a single frame from it. Here's how I read each part. These are my interpretations, not anything Qwen has said:
- Birds shaped like a fish. That's Kun in the middle of turning into Peng: still a fish in outline, already made of birds. "The becoming begins" describes exactly that moment.
- The blank and the cursor. 其名为_ looks like a chat box waiting for an answer. The name is the thing being revealed, which fits a product launch.
- Sunrise over the Northern Sea. Dawn is a beginning, and the story starts in the sea before Kun rises into the sky.
- Size. Kun is "so big nobody knows how long". Alibaba has already said future Qwen models could reach 5 to 10 trillion parameters, so a giant-fish metaphor is no accident.
Why a bird and not just a bigger fish? My guess is that Qwen wants to say the next model is a different kind of thing, not just more of the same. That would match what the team said in August when it released Qwen3.8-Flash-Next and called it "an experimental preview of the architecture that will underpin Qwen4", built around "a fundamental rethinking" of the design. A fish that becomes a bird is a neat way to say "new architecture".
Is Qwen 4 about to be released?
Probably soon, but there's no official date. Here's what Alibaba and Qwen have actually said, as of 7 November 2026:
| What | Status | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Qwen 4 exists | Confirmed: "currently in training" (22 Sep 2026) | Alibaba Cloud press release |
| Release date | Not announced | None |
| Model sizes, licence, price | Not announced | None |
| The teaser is about Qwen 4 | Very likely, but not stated | @Alibaba_Qwen on X, 6 Nov |
| Qwen 4 weights on Hugging Face | None yet (newest is Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo, 9 Oct) | Qwen organisation on Hugging Face |
| Qwen 4 on OpenRouter | Not listed (newest is Qwen3.8 Max Prime) | OpenRouter model list |
| Architecture preview | Released in August as Qwen3.8-Flash-Next | Qwen model card on Hugging Face |
Teasers like this usually come days, not months, before a launch, so I'd expect news soon. But that's a guess. You'll see YouTube videos and blogs quoting exact dates and model names; I haven't found any of those on an Alibaba or Qwen page, so I'm leaving them out.
Is there a Qwen 4 Preview I can try now?
Not officially, as far as I can find. I've watched a few YouTube videos where people say they've tried a "Qwen 4 Preview", so I went looking. On 7 November there was no model called Qwen 4 on Qwen's Hugging Face page, in Qwen's posts, or on OpenRouter.
There are a few uploads on Hugging Face with "Qwen4" in the name, but they're from other accounts, not from Qwen, and the two I opened had zero downloads. I'd stay away from anything called Qwen 4 that isn't on the official Qwen page. Fake model uploads are an easy way to waste a 50 GB download, or worse.
The closest official thing is Qwen3.8-Flash-Next. Qwen calls it a preview of the Qwen4 architecture, and its config file even uses the model type qwen4_exp. My guess is that this is what some of those videos mean by "Qwen 4 Preview". According to the model card, it's a 125-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model that only switches on about 6 billion parameters per word, with a 262K-token context (extendable to 1 million) and a new attention design.
The good news for home users: I've already run it. In October I got Qwen3.8-Flash-Next running at about 38 tokens per second on my 8 GB RTX 4060 Ti, after five config changes to free up VRAM. If Qwen 4 keeps this design, that's a decent hint that at least the smaller Qwen 4 models could run on a normal gaming PC.
What will I test when Qwen 4 comes out?
I want to try it as soon as it lands. Here's what I'll check first:
- Is it open weights? Recent Qwen models came with downloadable weights under Qwen's licences, and that's what makes them useful for local AI. I'll check the licence on the official model card before anything else.
- Which size fits an 8 GB GPU? My PC has an RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB and 64 GB of RAM (I wrote about how AI agents use that PC). My last dense test, a squeezed Qwen3.8-27B at 4.7 tokens per second, showed how quickly a 27B model runs out of room.
- Is it faster or smarter than Flash-Next on the same PC? 38 tokens per second is the number to beat.
I'll write up the real results in this series once I've run it, rather than guessing now.
The bottom line
Qwen's poster is a clever teaser: a fish made of birds, caught halfway through turning from Kun into Peng, with the name left blank for us to fill in. It points strongly at Qwen 4 and a real change in design, but the only official facts so far are that Qwen 4 is in training and that Qwen3.8-Flash-Next previews its architecture. Until Qwen fills in that blank, be careful with anything claiming to be "Qwen 4 Preview".

Checked 7 November 2026. I haven't used Qwen 4. My reading of the poster is my own interpretation, not Qwen's. The images were made locally with Qwen Image 2.1, the timeline chart was drawn from official dates, and AI helped me research and edit this post.
